Luke says that on one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear the word of God, he sat down and taught the people by the lake side from the boat.
When Jesus commands Peter to let down his nets – the night fishing ones – Peter responds saying, ““Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” That is the kind of response we ought to make to the Lord.
Note also Peter’s reaction to the boat-sinking quantity of fish – when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” There are echoes here of Isaiah’s “woe to me I am a man of unclean lips”. The glory of the divine son of man evokes a similar reaction to Isaiah seeing the LORD on his heavenly throne.
Having received the word of God, Jesus instructs Peter to “catch alive men” who shall live. They left everything and followed him.
