Jesus compared himself to a man sowing seed. Some seed fails to penetrate the ground, some seed is eaten by bird, some seed is choked by weeds and some seed produces a great crop. In the same way Jesus preaches the word of God to many people but only some believe and grow. In addition to physically hearing God’s word we must also come to Jesus. It is only in Jesus that God’s word is revealed to our hearts. Not everyone truly hears but only those to whom the word of God has been given.
This requires a response. Jesus says that if we have been given the privilege of hearing God’s word we must hold in fast in our hearts and cause it to produce fruit in our lives. We need to be careful how we hear because to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.
